A Counting

Currently, on view in ‘Who We Are: Visualizing NYC by the Numbers’ at the Museum of the City of New York until July 19 ‘20.

A Counting is a software-generated voice and text-based video portrait of New Yorkers counting from 1 to 100. The video sounds a different voice and language for each number and displays the word. The software counts forever and generates every count in real-time, so no count is the same and everyone who participates is heard.

Throughout ‘Who We Are’ we're collecting recordings of New Yorkers counting in their native languages via our 24/7 hotline and adding them to the artwork. There are over 600 languages spoken in NYC and we want to record as many as we can. Please help us create an artwork that includes the many communities, voices and languages of NYC by calling 917-905-6647. Our hotline is an interactive voice response system so just call and respond to the prompts. Recordings take about 5 minutes.

AS FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE, COMPENSATION OF $10 AMAZON GIFT CARD FOR EACH LANGUAGE WE HAVEN’T RECORDED IS AVAILABLE BY REQUEST. RECORDED LANGUAGES ARE LISTED BELOW.
