A Counting was created by Ekene Ijeoma, his group Poetic Justice at MIT Media Lab, and The People in response to the U.S. Census which has historically underrepresented and miscounted non-White and English speaking communities.
A Counting counts to a hundred (a whole) using all the languages of a U.S. city. It's accessible to the public as both a generative sound work on the phone and generative video work here. In both versions, phone recorded voice samples of people counting in their languages are remixed into a count to a hundred with a different voice and language for every number.
As a “language acknowledgment” one will always be in a language indigenous to the land of each city, if available. The counts keep repeating and evolving as different voices and languages are algorithmically selected every time. In the video version, you see the numbers written in the language’s native script.
We're expanding the series to other cities and looking to partner with cultural institutions and community groups including museums, galleries, libraries, schools and places of worship. So if you want to hear your city email us at email@example.com.
